If it’s been a little while since your summer hols and the shorter, crisper Autumn days arriving, now is a great time to think about taking a weekend break – but what to pack? For a few short days away, there really is no need for excess baggage - you will be able to take the essentials and more in a carry-on bag and still have a selection of outfits you can mix and match to suit the weather and the occasion. A recent survey found that on average, women wear less than half of the clothes they pack to take on holiday, so instead of wasting time on endless items that don’t get worn, get to grips with these simple techniques to get everything you need for a great weekend away without straining a zip on your case.
Getting Practical
Before you pack a thing, take a good hard think about your plans – will you be walking, sightseeing or taking in some great nightclubs – or maybe all three. Select the outfits you will need and lay them out. Then consider what you are going to wear for each part of your break (do you really need that extra top that doesn’t really go with anything?). It will certainly help to base your outfits on a neutral colour such as navy, black or taupe and then add complimentary accessories such as scarves, necklaces, belts and shoes in colour. And talking of shoes – how may pairs will you REALLY need? Wear the most practical of your selection to travel in, then choose a more glam pair for your case for evenings out. A slim pair of ballet pumps are a lifesaver and take up virtually no space at all. An evening handbag or on-trend clutch can double up as storage for smaller jewellery and scarves in your travel bag. Last of all, to be savvy with your packing, check out the amenities at your chosen location – really no need to pack a hairdryer if there is one provided.

Pack a Punch
Roll up all the items you can as this will reduce creasing. Anything tailored should be turned inside out - tuck in the sleeves to keep shape and minimise crumpling. Pack shoes at the bottom of your case and utilise the corners of your bag. Save space and pop all the small items, like undies and socks into pockets or inside shoes.

The List
So here is the lowdown, your essential packing list for the perfect getaway:
  • 1 Mac/coat
  • 1 Jacket/cardigan
  • 1 pair of trousers/skirt
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 1 dress
  • 2 tops
  • 2 scarves
  • 1 pair of loafers/brogues/sneakers
  • 1 pair of killer heels
  • Lingerie & nightwear
  • Accessories
  • Toiletries & cosmetics

Using these tips, you will save time packing and choosing your outfits whilst you are away as you will already know what you have, and take no time at all deciding what to wear – so that means more time enjoying your precious time off.
